The Power of THAT FEELING - The Break Issue 39
Welcome to the new members of The Break! I’m in Florida this week on Spring Break with my family.
In between chasing kids on the beach, playing catch and having some nice meals, I’m thinking a lot about that feeling.

I'd wake up in the middle of the night with my heart pounding in my chest.
I could hear it in my ears, and see it beating in between my ribs on the left side of my chest.
I'd lie awake for hours in the night afraid to fall back asleep because I wasn't sure I'd wake up at all in the morning if I did.
Sunday afternoons would roll around and I'd begin to get irritable, anxious, fidgety.
I remember my anxious vacations wondering what email, text or phone call I was gonna get from work.
I remember that nagging pit in my stomach that told me something wasn’t right.
That feeling is powerful.
But we often don’t listen to it. We squash it, push it down or try to ignore it because we are confused about how we can change it. But its always there.
That feeling is real.
That feeling is, dare I say, correct.
Do me a favor this week:
Sit with that feeling.
It is giving you valuable information and wisdom.
And tell yourself you don’t have to feel that way.
You have more power to change your circumstances than you know.
You can design your future and change your present.
In the word of one of my favorite investors, Ray Dalio:
Tolerating a problem has the same consequence as not identifying it. Identify your problems and then don’t tolerate them.

What’s happening on the pod?
In this episode, Mike Gardon chats with Sara McElroy. Sara McElroy is an ex-chief marketing officer and former hustle culture devotee who reinvented her career and reimagined the way she works after unexpectedly becoming The Wall Street Journal’s poster girl for pandemic burnout.
Between the demands of her CMO role and MBA program, she was clocking up to 20 hours of work per day, and her body began to rebel.
Two trips to the ER after throwing up blood, and one shingles diagnosis later, she finally hit her breaking point.
In just 97 days, she quit her hard-won chief marketing officer job, trekked to Peru's Sacred Valley to reset her frayed nervous system, and moved from the buzzy metropolis of Atlanta to the beach in sunny Boca Raton, Florida for a new job and a fresh start.
You made it to the end! Hopefully you learned something about breaking your career today! If so, please share this with someone you care about.
