#64 Stepping Into the Future: Your 7-Day Guide to a Career Leap!

Hello Unbreakables!

I'm back and energized, to dive into something that's been on my mind – and probably on yours too: the messiness of Career Change.

I know, just reading those words can send a flutter of anxiety through your chest, as it has for me many times - 6 to be exact. Yes I've made no less than 6 major career changes.

And not the "I'm changing companies" kind.

More like the "I'm changing industries, roles, skill sets, going to build a business then go back to corporate and then build a business to get me out of corporate" kind of changes.

I know a lot about the anxiety of change.

The Ticking Clock of Change

You feel it, right? Each week, another tick-tock in the background, a subtle reminder that you're yearning for something more, something different. If it's been months, or even years, and you're still ruminating about a change, it's not just a fleeting thought – it's a siren call.

Lets not let "life" waste another 6 months of progress we could be making towards our future.

Instead, use these 5 steps to get moving in the next 7 days.

1. Step Into The Uncertainty: Your First Bold Step

News flash: everything in life is uncertain. When you realize this, your entire world changes. But it's not all bad because there's a massive upside to uncertainty. But only if you step into it.

You must:

  • Acknowledge the uncertainty of life as a constant.

  • Shift your mindset: View uncertainty as an opportunity for growth and discovery.

  • Act: Start exploring paths you've hesitated to consider before.

2. Identify and Believe In, Your Zone of Genius

We need a strong foundation, and something about us to have faith in as we step into uncertainty.

To find that rock solid intersection of YOU, answer these 3 questions:

  • What do you love doing (that you could do for the next 10 years)?

  • When do people say you are at your best? What are you doing? If you don't know, ask.

  • Identify your unique ability: What can you do that others can't?

Now start believing in it because we're going to go activate that in the world.

(we go way deeper into this in my Advantage Mapping system, but these questions are a good quick start)

3. Create Your Long Term Vision

This isn't a goal. It's a VISION. Close your eyes and see what you want out of life in great detail. Name it. Claim it.

Realize that if you don't create your own vision, one will be created for you by society, your company, your boss or someone else.

You need to be in control of where you are going.

4. Build Your Options Portfolio

Because life is uncertain, we don't KNOW exactly how to get to that vision.

We need to solve that problem in multiple ways.

An options portfolio is a thinking exercise that has you define multiple, but no more than 3 pathways for you to attain your vision.

  • Brainstorm multiple pathways to achieve your vision.

  • Limit to no more than three viable options.

  • Act: Outline steps for each pathway and start experimenting.

5. Focus Only On The Next Step

This is the most important part.

What is the next thing you can do that will get you information (signal) that you more confidence along a pathway.

Forget 10 steps down the road. We're going to delegate those to our future selves.

Just focus on the next thing and then the next one. Remember, a journey of 1,000 miles begins with taking the first step.

  • Concentrate on the immediate next step that will move you forward.

  • Act: Implement this step and use the feedback to guide your next move.

BONUS 6th step!!

At the end of 7 days of implementing these steps, look backwards and notice all the progress you've made. Compare that progress to the months or years of inaction. Let that progress fuel you going forward, and build the habit of always measuring progress backwards, instead of looking at how far you have to go.

This is how we build our Belief Flywheel!

The Latest Conversation on THE BREAK Pod

Our guest, Arun Gupta, brings a unique perspective to the table, one that challenges conventional notions of purpose and profit in one's career.

We're about to dive into a topic that could reshape how you think about your own professional journey. But before we get into that, I want to share a thought-provoking student testimonial from Arun's website, which perfectly sets the stage for our conversation. It goes like this: "Rather than thinking about your career decisions as a series of trade-offs between profit and purpose, look for mission opportunities where you can have the most catalytic impact."

This approach challenges the traditional binary thinking that many of us have been taught, where you're either doing good in the not-for-profit sector or making money in the private sector. Arun believes there's a middle ground, a space where you can align purpose, profit, and mission in a for-profit way.

Arun Gupta is a venture capitalist, Lecturer at Stanford University, and Adjunct Entrepreneurship Professor at Georgetown University. He is CEO of NobleReach Foundation, which is focused on catalyzing and inspiring a renewed spirit of national service through innovation.

So, without further ado, let's jump into this fascinating conversation with Arun Gupta and explore how a mission-driven career can redefine success.

You made it to the end! Hopefully you learned something about breaking your career today! If so, please share this with someone you care about.
